Final

Book Groups:
One way to compare the book groups to other types of discussion – in class, blogs, and plurk ¬– throughout the quarter would be to compare the types of different media that is incorporated into these diverse mediums. During Book group discussions (at least in my group), we strictly talk about the novels, as far as I know there are no videos, pictures, etc. shared. In class and while plurking, we watch and share lots of videos that contribute to the learning experience. I don’t necessarily think that this is a bad thing; it makes the discussions seem more pure and tangible, at least for me. We can get to the point and discuss only what is going on in our book without added distractions. We are able to construct our thoughts and add to these on-going discussions at any time. These book groups are strongly set up and I know that we are trying to utilize technology as much as possible in this class. However, I do believe that while using this online system of contributing and sharing ideas, we are missing out by not being able to soak in others’ personal and true feelings about the book. According to this article on body language (www.elc.pl/emailclub/body_language.doc), over seventy percent of human communication occurs through body language and expression. I feel like if I was physically with this group of people and verbally communicating with them as well as soaking in their real emotions and physical reactions, I would better understand how they perceived different aspects of Midnight Robber. If the book groups were set up using voice, or better yet, a video conferencing program like Skype, we could at least hear what each other has to say and we could depict different emotions and reactions that group members have based on their way of responding. Although you can let people know that you are smiling ☺. Furthermore, getting that personal relationship with the people in your group would make interacting with them more intriguing. If you do not know whom you are talking to or anything about that person, you are not going to be that interested in what they think or in keeping a conversation with them. I can directly connect this concept to real life situations; for instance, communicating with others via cell phone texting in comparison to actually talking to them in person. I feel like I can better describe and put forth my opinions and thoughts during physical conversation rather than while texting someone. I sometimes feel confused or feel like the person on the other side of the conversation does not understand and can not depict different speech methods like sarcasm while texting.
Midnight Robber was a good read though I was a little skeptical about it at various points throughout the book. But it really came together in the end. This book fit right in with the flow of this class. It had some very futuristic attributes to it and also quite a bit of sexual disturbances. This book had a strange dialog and original way of connecting ideas. This book kept me thinking about The Filth and The Ticket that Exploded due to the overwhelming sexual disturbances forced upon the main character Tan-Tan. Her father repeatedly rapes her, she kills him and then sure enough, gives birth to his child. This book was also related to Renell and Kac’s collaborative writing Life Extreme and Paul Di Pilippo’s book Ribofunk because of all the futuristic creatures and genetically altered beings.

Animals and Machines:
Animals and machines today are two very opposite forms. First, animals are biological life forms and as of today, machines are not living creatures. Over the last approximately billion years, animals have developed into intricate beings from just tiny organisms. Living organisms were given a massive world in which to live, reproduce, and evolve. They started millions and millions of years ago, and they show no sign of stopping. This span of time gave animals the opportunity to diversify and multiply. It is amazing what nature can develop. Machines on the other hand are man-made creations. They are not one of nature’s beautiful creations, but a human idea conceptualized through metal and plastic. Machines and animals are similar in the sense that they both originated from a much simpler form. Animals came from very simple organisms and machines developed and progressed from the simple tools created by early humans. Both developed over many years, however machines are developing exponentially faster than it took animals to become what they are today, and as they develop more and more each year they become more and more akin to animals. In Life Extreme, Renell and Kac look deep into technological intelligence and new age evolution induced by humans. As I think about the process of developing robotics with the capability to obtain advanced synthetic nervous systems, I can’t help but compare a machine with this capability to a biological being. Through technology, it is amazing what we are doing with animals and genetics. For example, the Wholphin, which is a mix between a whale and a dolphin, was conceived through the non-invasive assistance of scientists. I can’t help to think of this new human-influenced creature as a robotic creation. With robotic technology advancing as it is today, I believe that robotics will someday soon not be viewed as much as a machine but more as an animal, not biological but a whole new category. Ronell and Kac also talk about how humans train each other along with their pets to be good companions, and as of now robotics in my opinion are not companion compatible. I think to be a companion an organism has to be able to think and have specific knowledge and history of the other person. Today this is not possible for machines, although it is bound to happen in the near future.
Humans have many uses for both machines and animals. Humans have used animals and tools to form and maintain farmland, now farmers no longer depend on animals to do there work because they have built machines to do the specific tasks quicker and with less effort than it would take with horses, cows, ox, etc. I personally have used many machines in Wenatchee, WA. while working in orchards. For as long as I have worked there, we have never used animals as laborers, we strictly use machines: tractors, scales, ATVs and automobiles. Without these machines, the harvest would be much more labor intensive and would require many more people and animals for assistance. At least for now, machines have been dependent on humans to make them work and progress into what they are today. Interestingly enough, machines and humans have a lot in common. If we were made in God’s image, machines were made in ours, but more specifically in one aspect of us. Although, in many societies, people are becoming like a new version of machines. This is typical in religions and cults where people no longer can think for themselves and turn into close-minded individuals. They lose the freedom to think freely and their rationality becomes dependent on others’ concepts and rules. This sounds eerily similar to the “mind” of a machine. Ultimately, machines and animals occupy different realms of the known universe, two realms that will slowly begin to resemble each other.

Blogs:
I just finished reading the entire blog of Kelsey entitled Samurai K. I thoroughly enjoyed reading what she had to say. It made me feel like I was not the only person slightly lost and not completely head over heals about the advancements in technology and the idea of machines taking over our planet. “I've been thinking a lot about the robot video we saw in class and I can't help but be scared of robots taking over the planet now. Those computer generated robots that evolve were probably one of the more scary things I have seen in a while.” Bloged Kelsey. This has been one of the main themes that I have been thinking about in this class. After we watched that video on the gray goo I was terrified! All I could think about was how stupid the human race is if we know that this could realistically happen and yet we continue research and push the progression of these tiny robotic organisms. Yes, theoretically Nanobots could help human kind, the slim chance of them destroying planet earth as we know it is just not worth it to me, obviously. In this class I especially loved the topic of multiple dimensions and universes. I wish that we could have covered a little more of these topics. “The Powers of Ten and the Dimensions video were very unanticipated for the first day, as was the Donald Duck cartoon but they made me think and made the whole class atmosphere open-minded and a bit more jolly,” Kelsey said. As depressing and frightening some of the material was in this class, I did seem to be somewhat comfortable during in class discussion. The Donald Duck and similar videos where a good way to bring forth controversial subjects in a comforting manner.
In my honest opinion, The Ticket That Exploded was a huge waste of my time. “Well, I guess reading doesn't have to make sense but I'm having a hard time grasping anything that is written in the book. Maybe because I don't understand the right kind of "sense". Sometimes I think I have a vague idea but how does the author expect the reader to understand the story when it is all cut up into page long nonsense sentences?” wrote Kelsey. My eyes must just be totally closed from this kind of “sense” because there was very little of that book that I understood. Now that I think about it, I should have put more time into thinking about this text and really trying to figure out the relationships between what was cut in and out of this text. I can depict little similarities between the various topics, however I wish I would have put a little more time into understanding them. “So I'm 75 pages into The Ticket That Exploded...It seems to me like there is many different stories going on at once and I can't seem to link them together. I read one part and I'm like whoa this might make sense then there is static for a few pages then a whole new mind boggling situation occurs. For example there is the weird skin suit and how prisoners are being milked, the word machine, the nova criminals, and the sex area amusement park. A commonality I found between these is the fact that they all have to do with sexual acts, and the recording of sound and images and language. I'll be back when I have my epiphany…” This is exactly what I mean. I just don’t have the thinking capacity or literary creativeness that is required for this text. You responded to this post by asking the question, “why do we have such a reaction to sex?” But this is not traditional sex, throughout this book there is countless scenes of extremely creative abstract ways of achieving pleasure. Which to the average college student seems a tad bit out of the ordinary.
I look back on my blog posts thinking about my grade and regret not posting more about the books we read in class, what I felt a greater reason for bloging was to connect our personal thoughts and experiences to the class. Kelsey’s blog titled, Brain Waves and Things……. better correlates to my blog.
Most people in discussion during class seem to think that using as much technology as possible will better the human race. I on the other hand agree with Kelsey in this entry, “I love technology. Well at least what technology is right now. And if we don't use the knowledge we have won't it go to waste? If we have the means to better our lives than why not? For example, the internet, cell phones, and cameras are all things that I would hate not to have, but if this pretty simple technology starts to evolve and decide that I am useless than I am willing to go live in the forest without it.” She couldn’t have better explained how I feel about technology! While I love it how it is maybe not even as much as there is today, I cant stand the thought of it progressing any further. It steadily increases the amount of work we have to put up with. In the Hanford Nuclear plant along the Columbia river 2300 tons of nuclear waste is now leaking out of the underground storage unit and is estimated to reach the Columbia river in less than 10 years. This is a great example of how the advancements of technology is slowly but surely negatively effecting the human race.
My experience in this class has been beneficial and I have learned a great deal about how to appreciate the small in different topics and literature. It is nice to know that Kelsey and I have similar outlooks among various topics however I just can’t get myself to believe that advancements in technology are going to better this world. It’s just my honest opinion, that it’s best to leave change up to evolution and mother nature.
Thanks for an interesting experience and a thought provoking class! I hope you like my painting ☺

Technology and Pornography

What is it with Technology and pornography? I feel like between the books we read and the discussions we have in class we oddly always either end up talking about some way that robots will rule the world or some sick perverted sex scene that some so called brilliant human has thought up in his moms basement. Don’t get me wrong, I am very entertained by these conversations and they are quite elaborate and mind blowing however I just think it is a little strange that these concepts and theory’s come from ‘technologically’ advanced people, people who rarely see the light of day, so driven to perfect there WOW playing skills or figure out how to create robots so complex with memory so great that they will eventually exceed the knowledge of all of man kind. It just seems weird to me how these sorts of people are also so sexually active and corrupt. I don’t know maybe these home bound computer types get so into internet porn (the weird stuff that normal humans perform sexually) that this stuff all of the sudden seems dull to them. Maybe these people have developed a tolerance to fucked up angry painful delirious sex acts and need more. But wait have they ever had anything to begin with or did it all come from there own hand? have they ever had even a slight actual sexual experience? I’m not trying to hate on our Nanotext class or these types in general, I’m, sure it differs depending on how bad that individual is caught up in his basement computer lab, playing WOW or whatever else it is they do in there dim lighted work spaces. Whoever is reading this don’t get mad I am simply asking a sincere and legitimate question. What is the connection between technology and Pornography?

PATH

This has been a weird week for me and for some reason I keep on thinking about our placement into this world and how different our life’s would be if we were simply born into another town or went to a different high school or college, Even if you just lived in a slightly different area of town. What would have been different and would it of been for better or for worse? I guess what it comes down to is that you should always be grateful for what you have received through the path that you have chosen because, through some other path this world could just as easily been turned upside down for you.

Its crazy that difforent places throught the united states reacted such difforent ways, most citys just played it off like no big deal however boston viewed this situation as a bomb threat blowing this way out of proportion. And i think that the creaters of this ordeal are brilliant to talk about 70's haircuts in there press confrence! sooo funny, i cant believe that all this is true and really happend, loved this in class!

What Could Have Been

Why do people today make the choices they do? I believe humans choose how to live, behave, and act based on multiple things; whether it's their heart, genes, strong feelings/emotions, impressions, or information that they have obtained. With these core attributes and experiences people can make logical and rewarding decisions, at least to the best of their knowledge. The pathways that people choose, while may seem to be the best possible way at the time, could later lead them into an unsatisfactory lifestyle, catapulting them over possibly beneficial, life-altering experiences. It would be extremely advantageous if humans could somehow know which paths lead to which end points. This is how the fourth dimension is described to be. Throughout my life, I have made many mistakes (just like everyone else), but if I could somehow tap into the fourth dimension, I could see the future and choose exactly which path I would like to take. If only this was a reality.

I have recently been in a situation where time and knowledge played a huge role in its outcome. Now in this world and with the laws that govern it, this situation - being out of my control - did not turn out as I would have preferred. However, if I was rolling in the fourth dimension, the problem would have transpired differently - and in my favor - because I would not only possess my six senses, but a seventh sense, a sense unlike any other possessed by humans in this dimension. I would be able to twist and bend time. I would have the ultimate understanding of life and all its complexities. I would know exactly what to do at anytime to live the best life possible. This gift of foresight, which transcends 3-dimensional understanding of the universe, would completely negate the question of what could have been.

tech response

i think technology can be good, its just when technology overpowers us and starts to make us lazy is when it is too much. the technology within wakeboarding and snowboarding provide ways of getting people active and allow them to benifiet from what nature has provided us with.

Think about it. Think Think about it.

Nothing is permanent on sands of time.
Nothing, but the memories in heart will remain.
And the images in mind shall forever live.
Nothing will reappear, Nothing will repeat.

Never forget, But dare to dream.
Life will change and it will be better.
Possibly it will be better that before.

Making friends with seagulls and a duck.

I biked down to the pier walkway in Fairhaven this morning and sat next to some seagulls. Its troubling to think of the lives of seagulls, on one hand they seem so relaxed and have no worries but on the other hand all they have been doing this whole time is sitting, sitting, and sitting. What are they doing? Thinking? How am I different from this creature? I feel more like a seagull at this point in my life than a human, sitting, waiting, wondering what is in store for me in the future, what am I supposed to be doing? What is my purpose or do I even have a purpose or am I simply on this world by chance to live for myself? I made a friend he keeps on diving to the bottom, I think in search of food and then comes up, looks at me for a second then repeats. I have a feeling that my new friend is looking at me in the sme way I am looking at him. He seems to be wondering what I am doing just setting here wasting precious time. He is at least diving to get what he wants. I don’t even know what I want, and if I did I doubt I would be diving to the bottom of Bellingham bay to retrieve it. What a crazy ass duck.

Lets live in the forest, Im done with this shit.

Technology and the creation of it, is often referred to in today’s society as the only form of progression, requiring all inventions to be constantly improved. Through my eyes, technology does not always fit this mold, for it is a newfound power constantly abused, and can be a burden. Though it has proved itself worthy in the past as providing easier and more efficient ways of learning. Although the Internet and new media aid us abundantly, this aid is limited. The accelerated life style that our generation possesses is influenced greatly by the vast progression of technology. We are so eager to get out there and experience everything we can, as fast as we can, because nobody really knows what is in store for us, and they want to find out before it is too late. Technology has tormented society in its entirety and has yet to cease. It diverts the attention of students from school work to the abundance of diverse sites on the Internet, latest products and funniest clips with just a click of a button. It also frightens employees by the termination of thousands of jobs appointed to new machines across the country. If anything, I think technology will drive us further away from where we want to be. Technology is capable of providing both goods and evils, but I deeply believe that if our technology continues to progress, that it will eventually degrade our culture, and negatively effect the way we perceive and use technology. The question you need to ask yourself is, how you want to live? Do you want to be tangled up in a meaningless cyber facade, or experience life in a way different from what is now ordinary. Stop and smell the roses, find your passion in life, and try as hard as you possibly can to escape from the technological advancing prison which walls continuously grow thicker and thicker.

difforent people's sense

Does everyone see, small, taste, touch and hear the same? Or does everyone create there own different way of experiencing life. Theoretically everyone might have to develop their own different mediums for all senses… and how does anybody know? One human soul can only experience their own body and no one else’s.

Parallel Universe

Scientists now believe that we do not only live in a universe but a multiverse. Our multiverse s are no longer believed to be compposed of particles but string like substances that interlink parrallel universes. These difforent worlds originated from the big bang. Each universe is very similar physically but function difforently. For example, in a difforent universe that is connected to ours could have had evolution take a difforent turn and humans would look a little difforent or not even exist... dinosaurs could still be alive in another one, and in a seperate universe the United states might have never seperated from Brittain. This theory blows my mind! is it possible? Anything is possible. What do you think?

After Death

There are an infinite amount of events that could follow our death. Throughout the last couple of months, I have been debating with myself different scenarios that could come of our subconsciouse. Do our minds or souls live on when we die? Do we even have souls or our existence just a combination of experiences and advancements in evolution? People’s views vary depending on whether they look at the world empirically and rationally, or spiritually. However, the world isn’t black and white and in my opinion, it is illogical to have starkly fundamental beliefs. There is no way to know for sure what happens; no one can prove anything for certain. So why kill one another on the theory of a mythological power? It begins to become apparent that the question of an afterlife is incredibly objective. What is true for one man is not necessarily true for another, and definitely not true for the majority. Many of our world societies suffer because of different and intolerant beliefs that were most likely force fed upon them. I have stepped back from a Christian upbringing and really thought to myself about a lot of different views, and I am still not quite sure what I believe in. I have gained new perspectives on the world and believe that I have grown into a better person; not being a follower and actually thinking for myself, I believe I have obtained a better understanding of myself and our universe.
Is it healthier to worry about what happens to you, and maybe follow some random beliefs that makes you feel comfortable or think about life yourself and live life for yourself and for the ones you love?

Dimensions: My theory of understaanding time through subconscious

After watching the video Imagining the Tenth Dimension I began to think about the dimensions and haven’t stopped. What if we could live in the fifth dimension! From my understanding of that video we would be able to live life, but each person would have complete control over where they end up in life. You can look way into your life and see what you need to do in the present to live the life you really want. However to this theory I already see some obstacles. Im guessing that if a significant amount of people are living in a fifth dimension world, then wouldn’t these peoples life paths constantly be getting scrambled around due to others changing there own life’s? And what is responsible for time becoming a human sense? How would we ever be able to comprehend the fifth dimension? Or maybe we are actually already in it! Think about this, we don’t use most of our brains and possibly these parts of our brains are responsible for seeing the future. We cant access these parts of our brains in our waking life today but isn’t it possible that our subconscious could be our portal to the fifth dimension? I think this is actually a possible idea, and I might have already had a little taste of this. In elementary school I had a very vivid dream it wasn’t anything really important in fact it the events were sort of bland, However I have remembered it for years now and it really freaked me out last month because everything that occurred in that dream played out in one day. So last month right after this happened I called my friend Cody Gibbons from Wenatchee who is really in to lucid dreaming and has a lot of knowledge in this department, he told me that this has happened to him before as well and to a handful of people he knew. I know this sounds crazy, a portal to the fifth dimension through your dreams but who knows, anything is possible.
If the percentage of our brain that we do not use dose not do this I believe it does have some kind of significant importance not to our day-to-day waking life but to our subconscious life. Maybe dreams are complex puzzles that tell our futures but we as individuals have yet to understand them.

The Invention of Morel

Throughout this book I questioned many of the narrators moves and decisions, mainly comparing them to what I think I would do in a similar situation. I thought that the narrator didn’t necessarily know what he was getting in to when he used morels machine to record his waking life spliced into the original recording. The point behind this machine was to provide a never-ending life for certain people. Except all the characters that where on the island before where happy when recorded, but the narrator simply did it so people would think that him and Faustine where together, not realizing that the thoughts he was having at the time of recording would be the ones he will be having for the rest of time. He will not live forever as Faustine’s lover as he planed but he will live forever just as he was that week with the knowledge that he was just imitating love.
The idea that this machine will make the people recorded live on forever seems a little farfetched and is basically a theory in this book, however the fact that after a subject has been recorded their body or body parts deteriorate makes this seem more plausible in the sense that once your body and soul have been recreated your original can no longer exist. Because if it did then you would be living with two souls, two sets of thoughts, two everything. This would be to much for us to comprehend

Pataphor (apple of my eye)

Last week I met a girl. Ever since she came along I have had this damn apple stuck in my eye. It was only a little bothersome at first but now it has started to rot, and I cannot put up with it any longer.
